India has urged the international community to tackle the exploitation of Afghan territory by terrorist organizations, specifically Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The appeal comes during a recent UN Security Council meeting dedicated to Afghanistan, where India emphasized their commitment to stabilizing the region.
What India Is Advocating For
In a passionate statement, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, highlighted the importance of coordinated global efforts to ensure that entities designated as terrorists by the United Nations no longer use Afghanistan as a base for operations. The Ambassador openly criticized how groups like LeT and JeM continue to align with regional threats, specifically pointing towards Pakistan as a facilitator.
India’s Engagement with Afghanistan
Ambassador Harish expressed India’s dedication to Afghanistan by mentioning active communications with its acting government. He noted, “India and Afghanistan share a civilizational relationship and Delhi has a paramount interest in ensuring peace and stability in the war-torn country.” This reflects India’s historical ties and ongoing support to Afghan citizens.
Need for Comprehensive Policy Change
India advocates for a more nuanced approach to Afghanistan’s challenges. Harish said answering the post-conflict issues of the nation requires strategies that promote positive actions while discouraging harmful behaviors. He remarked, “Focusing only on punitive measures is unlikely to meet desired results.” Therefore, there is a pressing need for innovative policies to elevate the Afghan populace out of hardship.
Humanitarian Efforts and Challenges
After the recent devastating earthquake in Afghanistan, India’s response was prompt. India delivered critical humanitarian aid, including 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food supplies.
According to Harish, “This humanitarian assistance dovetails with India’s support since August 2021,” when the Taliban assumed control. Since then, India has sent over 50,000 tonnes of wheat, vital medicines, and other necessary supplies.
Ongoing Commitment to Afghanistan’s Development
India’s involvement in Afghanistan doesn’t stop at immediate relief; it extends to long-term development initiatives. With more than 500 ongoing projects across various provinces, India remains committed to aiding Afghanistan’s reconstruction and development.
Harish concluded by reinforcing that India’s dedication to the Afghan citizens is non-negotiable, asserting that New Delhi would persist in its cooperative efforts with the international community for achieving a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Afghanistan.
