Rahul Gandhi Accuses PM of Betraying Ladakh People, Seeks Probe

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying the people of Ladakh. He demanded an impartial judicial probe into the police firing that claimed the lives of four protesters in the union territory.

Among those killed was Tsewang Tharchin, a Kargil war veteran, igniting outrage from various quarters. Gandhi, who is currently on a four-nation tour in South America, shared a poignant video on X featuring Tharchin’s father. He wrote, “Father in the army, son in the army – patriotism runs in their blood. Yet the BJP government shot and killed this brave son of the nation simply because he stood up for Ladakh and his rights.” Gandhi poignantly noted the father’s pain-filled eyes symbolized a broader question regarding the sacrifices of armed forces personnel.

“We demand an impartial judicial inquiry into these killings in Ladakh, and the culprits must be given the harshest punishment,” Gandhi asserted. He further claimed, “Modi ji, you have betrayed the people of Ladakh. They seek their rightful demands. Engage with them – stop the politics of violence and fear.” His statements resonated with many who are advocating for rights in the region.

The Congress party expressed vehement outrage following the police firing incident which saw Tharchin among the victims. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted Tharchin’s esteemed service at the Siachen Glacier during the Kargil War. In a post on X, Ramesh expressed, “Tsewang Tharchin was peacefully protesting for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. It should invoke our deepest anguish and outrage that he was killed along with three others in the recent violence.”

On September 24, events escalated when four individuals lost their lives during police actions aimed at controlling protests advocating for statehood for Ladakh. The tension in the area peaked as demonstrators allegedly set fire to a local BJP office and clashed with police and CRPF personnel, hurling stones amidst a chaotic scene.

In the aftermath, on September 26, notable climate activist Sonam Wangchuk found himself detained under the National Security Act and was subsequently held in Jodhpur jail.

This violent episode has sparked significant turmoil in Ladakh as residents demand greater autonomy and recognition under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Proposed for regions with distinct tribal populations, this status aims to provide more control over local governance and development.

With the region experiencing increasing unrest, Rahul Gandhi’s remarks may serve to amplify calls for accountability and justice regarding police conduct in Ladakh. As tensions persist, it remains critical for governing bodies to engage proactively with citizens to mitigate further escalations.

The unfortunate killings and protests underline a deep-seated appeal for justice and rights among Ladakh’s populace. The Congress party’s stand reflects broader sentiments within the region advocating for equal representation and the safeguarding of their rights. As the situation evolves, further scrutiny and dialogue appear necessary to address the grievances of the people of Ladakh.
