Kohli and Rohit Aim for 2027 ODI World Cup, Gambhir Urges Focus

Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have expressed their ambitions to participate in the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, yet head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the significance of focusing on current performances. This statement, made on Tuesday, highlights the duality of aspirations and immediate improvement within the national team.

The transition phase initiated by the national selectors through Shubman Gill’s captaincy in ODIs clearly indicates a shift in strategy. With Kohli and Rohit approaching 39 and 40 years of age respectively by the time of the World Cup, the selectors must evaluate their long-term viability in the squad.

“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is essential to stay in the present. They are quality players whose experience is invaluable. I anticipate they will contribute positively to the upcoming series in Australia,” Gambhir stated while addressing media inquiries regarding the future roles of Kohli and Rohit.

The Indian cricket team will play a total of nine ODIs—three each against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand in the coming months. Their performance in these matches will critically determine Kohli and Rohit’s potential participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

In his first full year as head coach, Gambhir has emphasized identifying new talent across formats, working towards a robust selection process. He explained that crucial qualities for national selection include talent, work ethic, and character, all leading to successful careers in Test cricket.

“You assess talent first. Then, the work ethic and character within the dressing room are vital, especially in red-ball environments. A player who embodies these attributes is poised for a successful Test career,” Gambhir asserted.

He acknowledged the challenging nature of international cricket, which he described as an “insecure environment” due to fierce competition for limited player spots. Gambhir reiterated the importance of providing players with adequate time to prove their worth rather than frequently altering the team lineup.

“Only 15 players can represent the country at a time, and many are waiting for a chance. Choosing the right characters and giving them time to demonstrate their abilities is essential,” he elaborated.

Gambhir also illuminated the emotional aspect of selection, dismissing the term ‘dropping players’. “You do not drop players; you select from among them. When someone misses out, empathy should guide the coach’s approach, not ruthlessness,” he stated.

Commenting on the England tour, he praised the squad’s discipline and work ethic, stating that it significantly boosted his confidence in the team’s readiness moving forward. “The Test squad that traveled to England exhibited unmatched discipline and hard work. That was a huge advantage for the team,” he concluded, encapsulating his vision for the cricketing future of India.
