GMC Doda NICU Delivers Care for One of Heaviest Newborns

In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth—one of the heaviest ever delivered at the institution. The baby was born on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother and required immediate specialized care.

Upon delivery, the newborn faced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, NICU staff swiftly admitted the infant for advanced management and close monitoring. Due to the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and critical respiratory issues, specialized neonatal respiratory support was promptly initiated.

During the initial days in the NICU, healthcare professionals monitored the newborn’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Remarkably, the infant began to show positive responses to treatment, allowing for the gradual weaning of respiratory support. This positive trend marked a crucial turning point in the infant’s care.

The final 72 hours before discharge revealed remarkable improvement. The newborn maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, with no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. This consistent clinical stability led to the newborn being discharged in a healthy condition, with a routine follow-up advised to ensure continued wellness.

The exceptional handling of this complex case stemmed from strong leadership under Dr. Najmus Saqib, the Head of Pediatrics. He collaborated with esteemed faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their collective expertise and effective teamwork were key to the newborn’s successful recovery.

This milestone not only demonstrates the medical capabilities of the NICU but also highlights the dedicated efforts of the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care were essential in ensuring the baby’s recovery and overall well-being.

The successful management of one of the heaviest newborns at GMC Doda reinforces the hospital’s growing neonatal expertise. It showcases the department’s commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children, thereby enhancing the region’s healthcare standards.
