Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for welfare schemes aimed at supporting construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This funding will undergo direct online transfer to eligible beneficiaries, ensuring timely assistance for those in need.
Officials confirmed that the allocated funds will reach all Assistant Labour Commissioners for immediate distribution into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This swift action reflects the government’s commitment to aiding vulnerable sections of the labor force.
The welfare schemes under this funding cater to various support needs. According to the Labour Department, these efforts include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, and marriage assistance. Additionally, the schemes also extend to providing financial support for the next of kin of deceased workers and meritorious awards for the children of registered workers.
During the 22nd meeting of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) held in July, Chief Minister Abdullah stressed the importance of redefining the term ‘construction worker’. He advocates for a broader interpretation to encompass all eligible laborers within the unorganized sector.
“We must ensure that every worker who needs assistance receives it,” Abdullah remarked, emphasizing his government’s ongoing effort to align labour welfare with national best practices. He underscored the significance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of laborers contributing to infrastructure development.
In a separate yet equally poignant development, the Chief Minister extended his heartfelt condolences over a tragic bus accident involving Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. Early reports indicate that the horrific incident took place near Medina.
A bus carrying 46 Indian Umrah pilgrims collided with a tanker while traveling from Mecca to Medina. Tragically, the accident resulted in the loss of 45 lives, leaving only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
Abdullah offered his prayers for the swift recovery of the injured and expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families affected by this calamity. This unfortunate event highlights the vulnerability of Indian pilgrims abroad and the need for enhanced safety measures.
While the Jammu and Kashmir government remains committed to enhancing support systems for laborers, it simultaneously mourns the loss of lives during this tragic accident. The community’s resilience remains pivotal amidst such discussing events, as both state authorities and the public unite to address the immediate needs of affected families.
