Delhi Struggles with Very Poor Air Quality; AQI Hits 360

Delhi choked under very poor air quality on Saturday, grappling with an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 360, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The current AQI categorizes the air quality as very poor, indicating significant health concerns, especially for vulnerable groups. The CPCB outlines AQI levels, where scores of 0–50 are good, 51–100 satisfactory, 101–200 moderate, 201–300 poor, 301–400 very poor, and 401-500 severe. With the index in the 300s, Delhi’s residents should be cautious.

On the same day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 11.8°C. Fog lingering throughout the day exacerbated the situation, contributing to the hazardous conditions. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 28.2°C, but the lingering fog poses additional challenges.

The IMD reported a relative humidity level of 100 percent, showcasing the intense moisture in the air. These high humidity levels worsen pollution as they facilitate the accumulation of particulate matter, making breathing conditions difficult for locals. Additionally, poor visibility heightens risks for motorists and pedestrians.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such air quality levels can lead to severe health effects, including respiratory issues and aggravated pre-existing health conditions. Children and elderly individuals face the highest risks, with recommendations for minimizing outdoor activities.

The city government continues to implement measures aimed at reducing air pollution, including odd-even vehicle usage policies and increased monitoring of industrial emissions. However, the persistent air quality issues reveal the need for comprehensive urban policies focusing on sustainable development and pollution control.

In the meantime, residents are advised to use air purifiers indoors and wear masks when venturing outside. Regular updates from the CPCB will guide actions that individuals and families can take to protect their health amid these distressing conditions.
