PM Modi Praises RSS on Centenary, Releases Coin and Stamp

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on its centenary celebrations, acknowledging its unwavering principle of ‘nation first’ in the face of challenges. Modi delivered his remarks during an event on Wednesday, highlighting the RSS’s significant role in nation-building efforts across India.

During his address, Modi emphasized the Sangh’s contributions in fostering national unity and harmony by overcoming divisions based on caste and creed. He noted, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided shelter to freedom fighters, and its founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was jailed several times in the struggle for independence.”

Reflecting on the historical hardships faced by the RSS, Modi recalled various instances where the organization encountered bans and false accusations without harboring hatred or resentment. He quoted the late RSS chief, Madhav Golwalkar, who famously remarked: “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.”

Modi further highlighted the resilience of the RSS during the Emergency period, attributing this to two core values: commitment to society and faith in democratic processes. He stated, “Two core values – oneness with society and faith in constitutional institutions – have kept swayamsevaks composed in every crisis.”

To commemorate this historic event, the Prime Minister released a special ₹100 commemorative coin alongside a postal stamp. The coin features the national emblem on one side and, for the first time in independent India, Bharat Mata depicted in Varada Mudra, alongside a lion and swayamsevaks bowing in reverence. The postal stamp showcases the RSS’s participation in the 1963 Republic Day Parade.

In a proud declaration, Modi emphasized, “This is a moment of great pride as Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time.” He also recalled the Sangh’s service during critical moments, such as the 1962 war, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the 1984 riots, reiterating its commitment to unity, equality, and compassion.

The Prime Minister praised current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, acknowledging his initiative for “one well, one temple, one cremation ground” as crucial steps towards eliminating discrimination.

In response, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude towards the government for acknowledging the organization’s service through the years. He described the coin and stamp as a tribute to the dedicated efforts of swayamsevaks since the founding of the RSS in 1925.
