Nine Candidates Vie for Four Rajya Sabha Seats in J&K

The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir intensifies as nine candidates have filed their nominations for the upcoming elections for four Rajya Sabha seats. Among the nominees are four from the ruling National Conference (NC) and three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The nominations, officially submitted to Returning Officer Manoj Pandita, Secretary of the Assembly, take place amid heightened political activity.

The election process begins with the first notification, which concerns one Rajya Sabha seat. Candidates Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan representing the NC, Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir from the BJP, and independent candidate Prabhakar Dada have filed their nomination papers.

With the NC-led coalition holding 53 MLAs, Ramzan appears well-positioned to secure this seat without needing additional support from Congress. The BJP, on the other hand, counts on its strength of 28 MLAs to push their candidate, Mir.

The second notification involves another single seat, for which Sajad Kichloo of the NC and Rakesh Mahajan of the BJP have entered the race. Given the similar voting dynamics, Kichloo looks set for victory as well.

The third notification covers two seats, attracting candidates Gurwinder Singh Oberoi (alias Shammi Oberoi) and Imran Dar from the NC, and Sat Pal Sharma from the BJP, along with independent nominee Kante Sayanna.

Political analysts suggest that the candidates with the highest number of votes will win the available seats. The NC coalition is expected to secure 29 votes for Oberoi and 24 for Dar. In contrast, Sharma anticipates receiving all 28 of the BJP’s votes.

After submitting his nomination, Rakesh Mahajan from the BJP expressed gratitude towards the leadership and optimism regarding the upcoming elections. “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats. The BJP gives equal opportunity to every worker, and all get their due right,” he stated.

BJP president Sat Sharma, also contesting, criticized the ruling NC while reaffirming the BJP’s commitment. “We will fight with all our strength and script history. We aim to win more than one seat this time,” he declared.

Another nominee, Dr. Ali Mohammad Mir, echoed similar sentiments, expressing his appreciation for being entrusted with this significant responsibility. “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” he remarked.

NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed the completion of the nomination process smoothly, highlighting their confidence in securing all four seats. “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” he said.

Senior NC leader Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, who is also in the contest, pledged to bring crucial developmental and political issues to Parliament’s attention. “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are numerous developmental and political issues that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” he stated.

Scheduled to take place later this month, these elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir are set to witness fierce competition, especially between the major political players — NC and BJP.
