In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed one of the heaviest newborns weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth. This milestone underscores GMC Doda’s commitment to exceptional neonatal healthcare and sets a precedent in the region.
The newborn arrived on 25th October 2025, at 1:20 PM, delivered to a diabetic mother who faced a high-risk situation compounded by the baby’s above-average weight. A mere 30 minutes post-delivery, the infant developed severe respiratory distress, prompting immediate action from the medical team.
Recognizing the critical necessity, healthcare providers transferred the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for comprehensive management and monitoring. Specialists initiated advanced interventions given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age condition and clinical indicators suggesting respiratory difficulties.
The NICU team provided tailored respiratory support while monitoring vital signs, including oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological status. Over the next few days, the infant demonstrated significant improvement, allowing for a gradual reduction in respiratory interventions.
In the final 72 hours leading to discharge, the newborn exhibited stable independent breathing, maintained normal oxygenation, and regulated body temperature without any episodes of apnea or cyanosis. This steady recovery permitted the medical team to discharge the baby in good health, emphasizing the importance of follow-up care.
The successful management of this complex case resulted from the leadership of the Head of Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, alongside esteemed faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their collaborative efforts, supported by a dedicated team of senior and junior residents, were crucial for the infant’s recovery.
Strong applause goes to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose vigilant care and unwavering dedication were instrumental in ensuring the infant’s successful recovery journey. The staff’s compassionate approach exemplifies the NHS commitment to quality healthcare.
This successful case highlights the expanding neonatal expertise and robust teamwork present in the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. The institution’s mission remains steadfast in offering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care for newborns and children across the region.
