Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra called for an impartial judicial probe into the Leh violence of September 24, which resulted in the tragic loss of four lives. Karra stated that a sitting High Court judge should lead the inquiry, or if that is not achievable, a retired judge known for their integrity should be appointed.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, Karra emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating: “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” This demand highlights the growing concerns over law and order in the region.
During the same press interaction, Karra paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries. He reflected on their enduring leadership and ideologies, which fostered a self-reliant India. Notably, he pointed out that Gandhian philosophy remains a source of inspiration across the globe, with its relevance even recognized at the United Nations.
Regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Karra assured that decisions about seat sharing and potential alliances would be made by the Congress leadership at the central level. He confirmed that senior party leader Digvijay Singh has been appointed as an observer for this process, ensuring strategic collaboration.
Moreover, Karra voiced his support for Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, insisting he should be permitted to attend the Assembly session. He argued: “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.” This statement underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles even amidst controversies.
